Having a go at Twitter

by @ 9:03 on February 15, 2007.

After Tom introduced me to Twitter earlier this week I’m going to test it out for a few weeks to see if it’s any use to me, beyond the curiosity of “eavesdropping” on the lives of the blogging and alpha geek communities.  Nosing around the various Twitter pages I can see a lot of the fraternity have been sucked in.  I did a little checking round the blogs to see what people were saying:

A few hours ago Anil Dash of Six Apart suggested we should “Consider Twitter“.  He picks up on the obvious passion of the developers involved who use the service themselves.  Anil suggests that:
“This idea of adding persistence to instant messaging and status messages is extremely powerful”
Wendy Sharp of Peachpit Commons is giving it a try but wonders:
“I am clearly really missing something, and I think it’s friends. Twitter has made me feel like an idiot. Worse, a friendless idiot!”
Euan Semple, in comments on my first post suggests he can take it or leave it, but says “Thanks Twitter” when it helped him meet up and have a good walk and discussion with Thomas Vander Wal in Washington.

For Apple fiends like Dennis, Iconfactory have developed some free software to make the Twitter experience more stylish on your Mac:
“Twitterrific is a fun little application that lets you both read and publish posts or “tweets” to the Twitter community website. The application’s user interface is clean, concise and designed to take up a minimum of real estate on your Mac’s desktop. “
Back in January on GigaOm, Liz Gannes suggested “Twitter Goes Corporate“, and reported that:
“Today, the folks at calendaring startup 30 Boxes joined Technorati, Ma.gnolia, and other companies use the service to send out development and downtime updates to subscribers over SMS and IM.”
Mario has used the API and his Perl expertise to add something useful.  He’s created a BBC News headlines feed, that has a URL back to the BBC site if you want to follow up.  He’s then extended this to  15 more feeds covering various categories of news.   Getting instant news headlines to your phone or in IM might be very useful.

Or distracting.

Back in December, Kathy Sierra wrote this long post plotting the  Asymptotic Twitter Curve of automated interruptions from pager, through e-mail, to blogs, MySpace and now Twitter:
“The most important thing, I think, is to stop being in denial about the profound impact this is having on us and those around us. Until we stop seeing interruptions as something that happens TO us, and understand the role we play in causing them, we’re in big trouble. “
So I’m giving it a try at twitter.com/DT
