While I was travelling home on the Tube on Wednesday I overheard two separate conversations referencing Facebook, and I saw article over someone’s shoulder in the free London Lite newspaper (or maybe it was Metro, but one of those anyway). When this kind of thing happens you realise that something different is going on and that Facebook is transitioning in to a cultural phenomenon.
To add fuel to the explosion, I’ve just read CNets’s “Facebook apps feeding frenzy” - a write up on Wednesday night’s Facebook Developer Meetup. The key passage has yet more staggering statistics showing the level of interest for getting on to a platform that was announced less than 4 weeks ago:
“Dave Morin, Facebook’s director of platform, told the Developer Meetup audience via videoconference that more than 40,000 developers have requested to be part of the project, around 1,500 applications have been produced so far, and some of the most popular went from zero to 850,000 users in three days. ‘This is unprecedented in the history of the Internet,’ Morin said to the developers.”
Unprecedented has to be the word for it. I’m watching the demand happen as my Facebook friends hunt around for the best applications, trying things to enhance their online presence and experience. To help my friends out, I wonder if they’ve found Facereviews? This site says:
“We created this facebook reviews and news blogsite to help share information with people that are passionate about facebook.”
There’ll probably be an explosion of these kind of review sites too. File under unprecedented, phenomenon, superlatives.
